Goal Setting Tips for Success in 2016

December 31, 2015

When the New Year rolls around, I always think about what I should do, could do, will do, and won’t do. I write things down, make comparisons, and end off with a laundry list of aspirations I’m not sure I can attain. This year, I want to do things a little differently.

My focus is on taking the necessary steps to see my goals through. I know it’s easier said than done, so I did a little research to help me this time around. Here are my top five goal setting tips. Please feel free to add your tips to the comments thread as well.

Be motivated. We all fall into the trap of talking ourselves out of reaching goals for myriad reasons. That’s why the goals you set should be driven by desire. If you really want something, nothing is going to stop you from achieving it. Every time you make an excuse not to fulfill your dream, your desire will propel you forward.

Do Something Daily. In order to attain any goal, you must always be working to achieve it. Repetition becomes routine. Take it seriously, and gain momentum with each passing day.

Be Willing To Adapt. If the mini goals you set daily become too difficult, make them easier. If they are too easy, and you are losing interest, make them more difficult. Whatever you have to do in order to maintain your focus, do it.

Schedule Downtime. You are going to procrastinate, and stray from your organized plan. Schedule intervals of free time into your overall goal setting. This way, your downtime is structured time off, and your breathers don’t become a habit.

Be Realistic. Make sure your goal(s) is something you can actually achieve, and give yourself a reasonable timeframe to accomplish it. Your goal(s) must be challenging without being overwhelming.

The secret to success is there is no secret. Prosperity is the result of hard work and determination. Stop making promises to yourself you cannot keep. Position yourself in the direction you want to go, and don’t stop until you reach your destination. Good luck!
