Happy Mother's Day: An Open Letter to Single Fathers
Single fathers don’t always have the best reputation. In some cases, the status is warranted; in many others, it is not. Being a single father calls for an unselfishness that rivals sainthood. Believe me, I know from experience. It’s easy to shun your responsibilities, and spend that extra money on things you think will bring you happiness. It takes strength and principles to utilize it for your child(ren).
Single fatherhood is a thankless job at times. The deck is stacked against you from the start, and you are always put in a position of proving yourself. Since the child(ren) does not live with you, it’s assumed you have a surplus of funds that you are misappropriating. In reality, the little you do have to spare once your own financial responsibilities are met, are spent on your child(ren). The problem is, it’s never good enough. It’s a lose-lose situation.
On this Mother’s Day, I want to thank you for taking on the responsibility of fatherhood. Thank you for the extra time you spend with your child(ren), and the additional money you offer to help in their upbringing. Thank you for assisting with discipline, and all the little extras—school trips, weekends at your place, surprise visits, class pictures, etc. Parenthood is a shared responsibility, and although the burden lies heavily on my shoulder since the child(ren) lives with me, I am grateful that you step in and help out the way you do.
So many children grow up fatherless. Our child(ren) will never have to meet that fate. Single mothers are quick to celebrate on Father’s Day; I want to return the favor. You deserve to be recognized and respected. For everything you’ve done in the past and will continue to do in the future, I wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!
