I Am... Just Wright
My newest obsession is Just Wright, a romantic comedy starring Queen Latifah, Paula Patton and Common. Latifah stars as Leslie Wright, a full-figured physical therapist who is tired of being every guy’s best friend. Leslie is called in by her step-sister, Morgan (Patton), to help with the rehabilitation process for her fiancé, Scott Mcknight (Common), following a knee injury he suffered during the NBA All-Star game.
Morgan is thin and beautiful, but proves to be callous and shallow when rumors of Scott’s basketball career possibly ending started to spread. She leaves him without warning, and it’s now up to Leslie to assist in his emotional and physical recovery.
The healing period brings Leslie and Scott closer, and they begin to fall in love. When Scott has fully recuperated, and has returned to the game, Morgan resurfaces to reclaim her spot. However, Scott is no longer interested in an on-the-surface relationship, he wants something more. He realizes that he is truly in love with Leslie, and he stops at nothing until he makes her his wife.
In the end, Morgan realizes the error of her ways, and Leslie and Scott live happily ever after.
After watching their love story unfold, I realized Leslie and I have so much in common. We are both plus-size, professional women, with a bevy of male “friends.” I have had love interests marry someone else, run off with thinner women, cheat--you name it, they’ve done it. Like Scott, they all return to beg my pardon when they realize what they have now is superficial. Unlike Leslie, I am not so forgiving.
With breakups come heartbreak, but I have pulled through because I know who I am, and what I bring to the table. I am an intelligent, beautiful, plus-size woman who is not going to settle for less. I am imperfect, and want someone who loves my imperfections. Until I find the one who is Just Wright for me, Leslie’s question will be my mantra. “When am I going to meet that one amazing guy who thinks I'm the one woman he can't live without?"
